What can we do when we can’t see our way clearly? When the challenges of life overwhelm us? When our fears overpower our faith?

 We can sing.

There’s an unforgettable story in 2 Chronicles 20, where King Jehoshaphat, one of the few good kings of Judah, found himself being attacked by a super-army from several nations. We are told that 'Jehoshaphat was afraid, and he resolved to seek the Lord' (2 Chron. 20:3). He gathered the people of Judah, and they sought the Lord with him, praising Him for His faithfulness, begging Him to involve Himself in the situation, and closing the prayer with, 'We do not know what to do, but we look to you' (20:12, CSB). Jahaziel, a member of one of the families of psalmists, then spoke a word from the Lord, '…the battle is not yours, but God’s.' (20:15). The Lord told them that the next day, they were to position themselves for battle, but 'stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord.' (20:17).

When morning came, Jehoshaphat appointed some singers to 'sing for the Lord and some to praise the splendor of his holiness. They led the way into battle. When they went in front of the armed forces, they kept singing: “Give thanks to the Lord, for his faithful love endures forever."' (20:21). As they sang, the Lord defeated their enemies.

In our present season of darkness – pandemic, division, rejection of the Gospel by our culture, and more – this story teaches us all the wonderful reasons to sing in our darkness.

1. Singing turns our hearts and minds to worship God for His greatness and His faithful presence with us – from the day of Adam until now.

2. Singing brings us peace, as we remember that God loves us and has promised that the battle always belongs to Him. We never need fight in our own strength.

3. Finally, singing in our darkness reminds us of the darkness Jesus faced on our behalf—darkness that led Him to death on a Cross.

And then, most of all, it reminds us that His 'light shines in the darkness, and yet the darkness did not overcome it.' (Jn. 1:5). Christ conquered the darkness of sin and death once and for all. As we declare this beautiful truth with our song of praise, we can face our trials with hope.
