Gate Of Heaven comes from the story of Jacob in Genesis 28:10-17

“Jacob left Beersheba and went to Haran. He came to a certain place and camped for the night since the sun had set. He took one of the stones there, set it under his head and lay down to sleep. And he dreamed: A stairway was set on the ground and it reached all the way to the sky; angels of God were going up and going down on it.

Then GOD was right before him, saying, “I am GOD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. I’m giving the ground on which you are sleeping to you and to your descendants. Your descendants will be as the dust of the Earth; they’ll stretch from west to east and from north to south. All the families of the Earth will bless themselves in you and your descendants. Yes. I’ll stay with you, I’ll protect you wherever you go, and I’ll bring you back to this very ground. I’ll stick with you until I’ve done everything I promised you.”

Jacob woke up from his sleep. He said, “ GOD is in this place—truly. And I didn’t even know it!” He was terrified. He whispered in awe, “Incredible. Wonderful. Holy. This is God’s House. This is the Gate of Heaven.”” Genesis 28:10-17 MSG

I've had some incredible experiences in worship where it seemed all of Heaven came pouring into the room. The air almost too thick to breathe in. Years ago in one of these moments I stumbled upon this passage, SURELY THE LORD IS IN THIS PLACE AND I DID NOT KNOW IT. THIS IS NONE OTHER THAN THE HOUSE OF GOD, THE GATE OF HEAVEN.

No better words to describe the moment I was experiencing. I've used the passage over the years to help define my own personal journey as I encountered His' presence.

Jacob was outside under the stars sleeping on a stone. He said, this is THE HOUSE OF GOD. It had nothing to do with windows, walls or doors. No stain glass windows, or high tech media screens. Just an open Heaven, Angels going up and Angels going down, and a doorway that led from the natural into the supernatural. Or maybe the other way around. An entrance for the Divine to come visit with flesh and blood. "What is man that Thou are mindful of him, or the son of man that you visit him?" For You have made him a little lower than the angels... Psalms 8:4-5

Again the mention of Angels.

This was the first time in all of scripture where THE HOUSE OF GOD is mentioned. And by definition, it was a place where the heavens were open, and there was angelic activity.

So the first verse of this song is about Jacob and his perspective.

"Wandering heart
Searching for promise

Fast asleep under the stars
Had a dream
The heavens were open
Could this be the house of God"

The second verse becomes personal. Bringing this idea to the 21st century, to the here and now:

"Here we are
With anticipation
In pursuit of who You are
In crowded rooms
Or wide open spaces
I know Heaven's not that far"

Then the bridge gives me the most incredible opportunity providing words to describe the glory of God encounters:

"I have found the gate Of Heaven
I can see an open door
I can hear my Father calling, Come!
The atmosphere is breaking open
Young and old
Rich or poor
Everyone will see Your Kingdom come!"

EZmix 2 - does it do what it says on the tin?

Songwriting and recording are not the same thing! We like stating the obvious! However, for many songwriters, the ability to record a good demo whether to play to their church or to a publisher or label is an important part of the process. A lot of time can be given to recording a good demo but it is often in the mixing and the mastering where our knowledge runs out. New from Toontrack is their EZmix 2 software plugin. We sent it down to Cornwall to Kristian Ponsford and asked him to plug it in and give it a go….

Holy Week Good Friday: The Sour Wine

How does Jesus transform a final act of cruelty into a miracle of grace? Read about the sour wine that the Roman soldiers serve Jesus on the cross.

the Friday pickle: do you need more silence?

Silence can be awkward, can’t it? But not all silence is equal. The times when the mic fails or you forget what song you’re supposed to be singing next can be a million miles away from those moments when the Spirit seems to press the mute button and the silence falls upon you all.
