Everything - Song Story

A while back I stumbled across a Celtic poem, which started with the words, “God to enfold me, God to surround me, God in my speaking, God in my thinking.” It got me thinking about worship. Worship involves offering up our everything in response to the one who gave His everything. We can’t respond with songs of worship, if our lives don’t reflect the truth of all that we sing about. Out of this I started writing the verses – “God in my living, there in my breathing. God in my waking, God in my sleeping…” It’s a prayer that God would be at the centre of everything. Sometimes we involve God in what we classify as ‘the spiritual aspects’ of life – church, prayer, forgiving people, loving the poor, but we forget to involve Him in every single aspect of our lives; our working, resting, thinking, speaking, laughing, hurting and hoping. The verses unpack this and the chorus summarizes it by simply saying, “be my everything.”

As I was playing around with the song I started singing out the bridge section – this is where the song melodically really begins to build. I was looking around for lyrics. Eventually I came back to the words of Paul to the church in Colosse, “To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.” These words say it all. We have Christ in us, the hope of glory. What an amazing truth! I hope this song helps us to gain in some small way a bigger understanding of all that worship is.
