Hold On - Song Devotional

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart. Hebrews 12: 1-3

At the cross Jesus took all our sin, all our shame, and all of our brokenness upon himself. Because of his sacrifice we can be free to come into God’s presence but many of us still struggle to do that. When we mess things up we may know in our heads that we can come to God to ask for forgiveness, but often we hesitate, perhaps not feeling worthy of that forgiveness. Sometimes we are carrying so much pain from things that have happened to us that it’s hard to come before God and remember that he is good, kind and loving. Often we’re just distracted by the things going on in our lives; we know that God is with us but it feels like he’s somewhere in the background behind all the other things we’re thinking about. Even our hopes can get in the way as we come to God; we can be so aware of things we’re longing for and the things we are desperate to see change in our lives, that we lose sight of God himself.

In Hebrews 12 we’re told to throw off everything that would hold us back from Jesus. Everything. We’re reminded there are so many things that can hinder us and keep us tangled up in knots but we need to actively choose to let them go and focus on Jesus instead. We’re running a race and the world will often trip us up but we need to get up, keep on running, and keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. It’s as we let go of everything else, and find ourselves empty handed, that we’re free to fully embrace the cross. And it’s there we realise that God gives us so much more than anything the world has to offer. We get distracted with the things we want but what we need is him and his life-changing presence. He embraces us with his amazing love that is constant no matter how we feel. Everything else loses its power when we’re at the cross. All the things that seem so important, or seem to keep us trapped, lose their grip in the face of God’s unending love.

This quote sums it up so beautifully: "Clinging to the cross, supposes that I have let go everything else, and that I throw my arms around it, and venture the whole weight of my eternal interests upon it. Clinging to the cross, intimates that I have both arms at liberty—that I turn my back on everything else, and facing it—I clasp it with a firm grasp, as a drowning mariner would a broken mast that was floating by his side" - James Smith 1857
