"Horizon" - the story behind the song

The song ‘Horizon’ was actually inspired by some personal events in my life. I've been struggling with my health for a long time and about two years ago it took a turn for the worse. I had to undergo surgery and treatments and when I came out of it, I was doing better but I still wasn't completely healed.

I had to be really honest with myself and ask some important questions…

How do I go on?

Do I focus on what my eyes can see, on the struggle, or do I fix my eyes on Jesus?

Do I dare to trust Him?

Do I praise Him in every circumstance?

Do I step out in faith and let Him take me to places yet unseen?

Do I hold on to His promises and believe in His word?

Around that time I read a poem by Sir Frances Drake and the line "we ask you to push back the horizons of our hopes" stuck with me. The image of Jesus taking me beyond the horizon ultimately inspired the lyrics. I wanted to make a bold declaration that would challenge me every time I sing it but also challenge and encourage our Church.

I was listening to a lot of beat driven pop songs at that time like Lorde and OneRepublic. And the arrangement that Dominik created really helped to give the song the right feel and energy.

‘Horizon’ has been really well received in our church, especially by the younger crowd. Many of them told us that it was their favorite song so far because it has a fresh vibe to it and sounds a little different.

That's really encouraging to me, but it’s not just young people it speaks to. Most of us have a tendency to get too comfortable with where we are in life. Instead of expanding our lives we start making them smaller and forget to dream big. This song is a cry out to God to take us further and not stay in one place. Because God always has the bigger picture and sees beyond what we see, we can trust him and step out boldly.
