The journey so far

As Worship Pastor at Johannesburg’s Bryanston Bible Church, and South Africa coordinator for Worship Central, Mark Counihan knows he’s on a journey. And it’s nothing short of epic. “It’s an adventure and honour,” he says. “And it’s all beyond my goodness and gifting.”

His involvement with LIV (the Durban based project that places orphaned and vulnerable children into a loving family environment) has fanned a flame within him. He’s passionate about family –especially when it involves inviting orphans in to be a part of it.

InterviewQuickfire Questions

My earliest memory is… Catching fish in ocean rock pools

If I wasn’t a songwriter/worship leader I’d probably be… Unhappy

The best sermon I ever heard was… Holy Discontent - Bill Hybels, Just Courage - Gary Haugen and Indescribable - Louis Giglio

My last meal on earth? It would have to be… Fillet steak on a fire or fresh Salmon in Sushi

The greatest sports team ever in the history of everything… New Zealand All Blacks Rugby. It’s hard for a South African to admit this

It was pretty embarrassing when I was leading worship one times and... My bass guitarist flew to the back of the stage. We thought it was a Holy Spirit encounter and continued worshipping; but it turned out to be a faulty cable electric shock encounter

My first album that I ever bought was… John Mayer-Room for Squares.

I wish I’d written this lyric… Can I choose two? As a person and a poet I love this from John Mayer: Had a talk with my old man/Said, Help me understand/He said, "Turn sixty-eight/You’ll renegotiate, don't stop this train/Don’t for a minute change the place you're in/And don't think I couldn't ever understand/I tried my hand, John, honestly, we'll never stop this train” (Stop This Train).

As a worshipper and a worship leader I love: “And as You speak/A hundred billion galaxies are born/In the vapour of Your breath the planets form/If the stars were made to worship so will I” (So Will I (100 Billion X), Hillsong United).

When I search Netflix, I mainly browse the… section. Would rather watch the sunset or the fire (natures TV)

When I listen to music, my favorite way to is… Loud and alone in the car

My first mentor was… unofficially Tim Hughes. Great friend, person and leader

The most recent thing I saw God do that made me praise Him was… Gloriously and graciously healed my son.
